Youth Volunteers Warm Communities: Home, School, Society Unite for Growth

When the blue of school uniforms meets the green of the community, and youthful energy collides with a heart for public service, a shared journey of growth unfolds. On Saturday, students from Nanjing University Affiliated International High School stepped out of their classrooms and into the neighborhood, equipped with brooms, dustpans, garbage bags, and litter pickers. Acting as young volunteers, they gave the community a fresh new look while, through the practice of home-school-community collaboration, gaining a deeper understanding of responsibility and dedication.

Hands-On Action: Youthful Presence Brightens the Community

“There’s a cigarette butt here!” “Why is there still paper in the bushes?” At the cleanup site, students in matching school uniforms worked with enthusiasm. Some crouched by the greenery, carefully picking up hidden scraps of paper and plastic bottles with litter pickers. Others coordinated seamlessly – one sweeping fallen leaves from the pavement, another holding open a garbage bag to collect the waste. A few even volunteered to help residents tidy up clutter near stairways, using small but determined gestures to brighten the community’s appearance. From tentative, shy beginnings to lively teamwork, sweat trickled down their foreheads while smiles never left their faces. This vibrant splash of youth weaving through the neighborhood not only made the surroundings clean and fresh but also won praise from residents who stopped to watch and applaud.

Joint Efforts: Home-School-Community Model Takes Root

Education has never been a solitary effort – it thrives on the shared resonance of schools, families, and society. This volunteer initiative serves as a vivid example of the “home-school-community” collaborative approach to nurturing growth:

School Leads the Way:

With the goal of “cultivating responsible young people for a new era,” High School Affiliated to Nanjing University is breaking the boundaries of the classroom and extending education into real-world settings. Through hands-on practice, students learn that “labor creates value,” transforming the concept of “serving others and contributing to society” from mere words in textbooks into tangible, actionable experiences.

Family Empowers:

Children, encouraged by their families, stepped out of their homes and turned the diligence and thoughtfulness nurtured within the family into a sense of responsibility for serving the wider community. Many parents remarked, “Watching my child bend down to pick up litter and work together so earnestly, I truly feel they’ve grown up – this kind of growth through real-world experience is far more powerful than words alone.”

Community Provides the Platform:

The Dafangxiang Community of Hunan Road Subdistrict opened its doors to provide students with a hands-on classroom close to everyday life. Community staff members Secretary Xie and Teacher Gong accompanied the entire activity, explaining the challenges of maintaining a clean environment and helping students appreciate the details of how a community operates. Through their interactions with residents, students also learned valuable lessons in communication and empathy.

From “Me” to “Us”: Unlocking Growth Through Service

From being the cherished “little princess” or “little prince” at home to becoming volunteers who actively serve the community, this shift in roles brought students a wealth of growth. One student reflected, “I didn’t realize cleaning up the neighborhood was so exhausting – I’ll never litter again.” Another shared, “Working together with friends, no matter how dirty or tiring, still felt joyful – that’s the power of teamwork.” Others came to a deeper realization: “Each of us is part of this community, and even small actions can make our home a better place.”

This volunteer activity was more than just a community cleanup – it was a profound lesson in growth. It encouraged students to step out of their comfort zones, experience the value of hard work, learn tolerance through teamwork, and gain recognition through service. At the same time, it united the strength of families, schools, and communities, weaving them into a powerful force to create a broader stage for children’s development. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dafangxiang Community of Hunan Road Subdistrict for providing this valuable opportunity, and to Secretary Xie and Teacher Gong for their full support and patient guidance throughout the event.

Looking ahead, High School Affiliated to Nanjing University will continue to deepen the “home-school-community” collaborative education model, launching more meaningful, real-life activities that allow students to step beyond campus and integrate into society. Through these experiences, they will cultivate a sense of national responsibility, strengthen their commitment, and grow into warm-hearted, idealistic, and capable young people of the new era. May the spirit of youth volunteerism keep spreading, inspiring more people to join in community building and work together to create a better home for all!
